Your Questions About Bluetooth Technology

Ruth asks…

How do you work Bluetooth while on your cell phone?

I just upgraded my cell phone. Came with Bluetooth. I am a little confused. How do you receive/send calls with it.

dknol answers:

Bluetooth Wireless Technology is integrated into your cell phone. In order to get it to work, you need to first tuen it on in your phone (it's a battery drainer, so it's probably turned off now). You are going to need to get a bluetooth wireless headset to pair with your phone. If you don't have a headset and have a high-end car, it may come equipped with the bluetooth also. The following is the sequence to follow when pairing your phone with a bluetooth headset:

From your phone:
menu>settings>connection (or bluetooth)>turn bluetooth on>yes>search for devices

Now, before you search for devices, make sure that your headset is charged. There is going to be a button on the phone that you will have to push in (in some cases, you may have to push two buttons at once), you will see a light flash on the headset. NOW, this light will either hold one solid color (usually blue) OR flash between two colors (usually blue and red). This is how you know that your headset is in pairing mode. Go back to your phone:

search for devices>ok>(it will find the device)>highlight the device and select>pair with XXXX (headset)?>yes>bluetooth passkey>0000 (always four zeros)>ok>bond with headset?>yes.

There you go! It looks harder than it actually is. When the headset is paired with your phone, you will see either a weird-looking “B” on the homescreen on the top where your signal and battery meters are, or you will see a tiny headset in the same spot.

If you are having troubles linking the two devices together, just take them both into the store where you got it. They should be more than happy to help you.

Good luck!

OH! To make calls, still use your dialing pad on your phone, it will automatically come throught the headset. When someone calls you, just hit the button on the side of the headset, it will answer the phone. To end calls in both scenarios, hit that same button on the side of the headset.

Ken asks…

What exactly is bluetooth and how does it work a cell phone?

I'm getting the Virgin Mobile Wild Card cell phone for Christmas and on the site it says it has “bluetooth wireless”. What exactly is that and what do they mean?

dknol answers:

Bluetooth wireless technology is a specification designed to enable wireless communication between small, mobile devices. Functionally, Bluetooth is no different than a physical cable. The key difference is that Bluetooth uses a radio link to connect devices instead of a cable. From that end, Bluetooth is an enabling technology and not an application. The inspiration behind this technology was the desire to eliminate the need for proprietary cables, which are currently required to enable device connectivity. For instance, in order to transfer images from a digital camera to a laptop PC, a cable is needed in order to connect the camera to the laptop. Each camera manufacturer and model has a different cable requirement. In fact every hand held device manufactured which allows connectivity with a PC has a different cable configuration. Imagine a scenario in which both the laptop PC and the digital camera use Bluetooth wireless technology which means there is no need for cables to transfer data between devices. Instead, the data can be transferred over a radio link. Expanding that idea to include all hand held mobile electronic devices is, in a nutshell, the Bluetooth wireless technology vision. No More Wires! A Bluetooth connection can be used to send and receive images, texts, video clips, notes, business cards, calendar notes, and can be used with a Bluetooth wireless headset. Bluetooth can synchronize with electronic devices such as personal computers and mobile phones.
