Donald asks…

Should i get a 360 or a ps3?

I am thinking about geting a new gam wconsole because have a ps2 but there so old. I want to get a 360 or a ps3. the 360 is cheaper now. so which should i get?

dknol answers:

People who say PS3's are ‘trash' don't know the actual specs (or decide to claim that more computing power has absolutely no effect on abilities & performance :) !

Here's un biased comparison (im an IT student):
PS3's have MUCH more power & Graphics (in fact, only about 30% of Ps3's resources have been tapped into vs 95% system resourses used by 360 in latest games…) Free online, and more features. The PS3 has every feature of the 360 but they are more advanced plus it has more. PS3 seems more expensive at first, but after adding all the things you need on a 360 they come to around the same price!

PS3 not only plays Blu-rays but it up scales regular DVD's to high Definition!
You can talk to your teamates on a PS3! Some games even come with a bluetooth head set that you can use on any blutooth device not Only a PS3

PS3 controllers not only vibrate but they are motion censored as well so the controller becomes an extension of your body, 360 may have more exclusives( fiction) but its exclusives are crap!!! Halo cannot compare with Metal Gear Solid 4!
Online gaming is free and it has built in wireless, you can also link it to your computer through WiFi and view all your videos, music and pictures. You DON'T need to have a Windows Media Centre PC like for the 360!

You can download Linix and use it as a computer and play PC games!!!
360 dashboard sucks! It has nowhere near the Elegance f the PS3 XMB

PS3 comes with a 40, 60, 80 or 160GB hard drive, you can also expand it at any time with an ordinary laptop hard drive it can take as much as you want it to!

Graphics PS3 displays 54BILLION polygons per second 360 only displays 9BILLION!

PS3 has 9 Processors at 3.2Ghz each with its INDIVIDUAL high speed cache
360 has ONE 3ghz processor divided into three cores with a shared cache!

PS3 has dedicated Video ram runs at 3.2ghz!!!
360 has no dedicated video ram…ram is shared with its system and runs at 500mhz (0.5ghz!!!!!)

PS3 Not only Displays (everything including GAMES) in 1080P high defiition and outputs sound in Dolby True HD (7.1 surround sound!) 360 only 1080i(half 1080P) and standard dolby digital 5.1. ALL 360 games output in 720p or less!!! Theoretically the elite can output 1080p via an update but without HD optical format (HDDVD dead!!!) this is just a marketing gimic

And finally PS3 games are on dual layer Blu-Ray disks(50GB)
360 games are on dual layer DVD's (8GB)

so from this ACTUAL comparison of specs the choice is obvious

Sony is losing about ~$200 per console…why? Because the PS3 represents many years of R&D and highly advanced hardware thats years ahed of its time…over time, sony will break-even with these fixed costs…this is GREAT for the consumer who is getting such an advanced piece of technology….( in contrast, the abismal 33%+ RROD failure rate of 360's is a testement to its fine workmanship). BTW ps3 sales have now “eclipsed 360 sales in most major markets” (see SMH) !

It's true Xbox 360 is a BIT cheaper but to repeat what The SCCE VP said Sony is into HIGH-END GAMING, AND MANY FEATURES, butif you want a LOW-END STRIPPED DOWN CONSOLE, with not many features, buy a xbox 360…A machine such as The PS3 needs to be a bit more expensive!

Thanks.

dknol answers:

If you want to game you don't want a Mac. Most games are made for Windows, and don't usually have Mac support. I went to Maingear's website and put together a 17″ Powerhouse as an example of what you can get for $3000

Display: 17.3″ HD+ 16:9 LED Display (1920×1080) with Super Clear Screen
Chassis: eX-L 17 Performance Chassis
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 2820QM 2.3GHz/3.4GHz Turbo 6MB L3 Cache GT2
Graphics and GPGPU Accelerator: NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 580M 2.0GB GDDR5
Memory: 8GB Kingston DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM (Dual Channel)
Hard Drive Bay One: 120GB Corsair® Force GT SSD SATA 6G (w/ TRIM) [555MB/s Reads]
Hard Drive Bay Two: 750GB Western Digital 7200 RPM SATA 2.5″
Memory Card Reader: All-in-One Integrated USB 2.0 Flash Card Reader & Writer
Optical Drive One: 6x Blu-ray Reader/8x Super Multi Combo
Ethernet Adapter: On-board Gigabit Ethernet
Wireless Network Adapter: Integrated 802.11b/g/n Wireless – up to 300Mbps!
Audio: Integrated High Definition Audio
Bluetooth: Integrated Bluetooth Technology Module
Web Cam: Integrated 2.0MP Webcam
Primary Battery: 8-cell Li-Polymer battery pack 77Wh
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Of course, you can customize it to be what you want, and many companies like Maingear, Origin PC, Digital Storm, and Falcon Northwest all do a great job of this. MSI is a good company too, but I can't get to their mobile website at this moment, it seems to be down

Michael asks…

Question on which laptop to get?

I'm a senior in high school, and am getting a laptop as my birthday and graduation present to take to university with me next year. I want a good laptop, especially one that's good for running audio editing programs. But I mainly just want a reliable one that won't crash on me. I'm leaning towards a Macbook or Macbook Pro, but haven't totally ruled out a Windows OS yet.
What do you think?

dknol answers:

If you like Mac that much, I would suggest you to wait for apple's future notebook because I assume they will reduce the limitation on their future Macbook Pro.

2 If you are a gamer, then yeah, waste of your money. Don't go Mac.

3 The MacBook Pro lacks a built-in media reader for flash memory cards, and there's no S-Video output or built-in modem–both of which the PowerBook had.

If you are interested in buying the Macbook and not the Macbook Pro, then here is my opinion:

1 You won't find a media card reader, however, which has become a common feature on many laptops. Unlike the MacBook Pro, there's no ExpressCard slot for adding components later. An Ethernet port, an Airport Extreme 802.11a/b/g wireless card, and the built-in Bluetooth take care of the networking.

That's the only fault I can find with it. It may worth your money, since you won't be paying over 2 grand for it, and you will enjoy their upcoming OS.

The Macs are not vulnerable to virueses, so you may benefit from that, too.

I personally wouldn't buy a mac, at least not now. I am yet to see them reduce the limitations of Macs. And I don't like Apple's policy. However, I bought some awesome Music videos off Itunes and unable to burn them to discs, simply because Apple decides not to let me do what I want with the VIDEOS I PAID FOR!!!!

And not just that I am unable to burn my videos, I also can't use other programs to play the video files. I will never shop with itunes again.

The Dell Inspiron E1705 offers an incredible viewing experience featuring an optional 17-inch widescreen UXGA display that gives you enough space to run applications side-by-side with incredible detail. Optional TruelifeTM technology boosts image clarity even further, offering up to a 10% higher contrast ratio than comparable displays with anti-glare coatings.

The integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 lets you enjoy movies and video with fast motion and impressive clarity. Take your visual experience even further by upgrading to the 256MB ATI MOBILITYTM RADEON® x1400 with HyperMemoryTM 7 to enjoy high-definition video, and 3D graphics and effects with stunning detail.

Dell MediaDirectTM puts your media and more at your fingertips. Now it also gives you “instant on” access to your calendar, contacts and presentations.

With the computer off, one press of the MediaDirect button gives you quick access to items on your hard drive, optical drive, a USB key or from the integrated 5-in-1 media card, including:

Videos
Music
Photo slideshows
“Instant Office” featuring – Microsoft® PowerPoint® Viewer, Microsoft Outlook® and Outlook Express Calendar Viewer, and Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express Contact Viewer

Plus, a new password protection feature offers enhanced security – most other instant-on solutions don’t provide this level of “instant office” functionality, flexibility and ease of usability.

I don't see any other 17′ notebook out there that beats this one, and the price is just $899
