I am thinking of starting to play world of warcraft. Is there any specific software I need or should I just get this cataclysm thing and that will be enough?

To enjoy the whole content offered you need to buy the original game plus all the expansions. If you are new and just getting started just buy the basic world of warcraft game and try it out, or even get a 10 days free trial on the world of warcraft website.
make sure that you have plenty of memory on your hard drive, a lot of time to waste, and a mouse.
You need to buy and install:
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft Burning Crusade
World of Warcraft Cataclysm
Then you need to pay to play http://us.battle.net/ and download all the updates.
No specific software needed. Your computer just needs to run these minimum system requirements:
FOR WINDOWS
Windows XP 32bit (SP3), Windows XP 64bit (SP2), Windows Vista 32bit (SP1), Windows Vista 64bit (SP1):
* Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500
* 1GB or more of RAM
* NVIDIA GeForce FX or ATI Radeon 9500 video card or better
* DirectX-compatible sound card or motherboard sound capability
* 25 GB free hard drive space
* A keyboard and mouse are required. Input devices other than a mouse and keyboard are not supported.
* You must have an active broadband Internet connection to play
FOR MAC
Mac OS X 10.5.8, 10.6.4, or newer:
* Intel Core Duo processor
* 2 GB RAM
* 25 GB free hard drive space
* A keyboard and mouse are required. Input devices other than a mouse and keyboard are not supported.
* You must have an active broadband Internet connection to play
Then around $120 dollars for the game discs:
* $39.99 for Cataclysm expansion
* $39.99 for Wrath of the Lich King expansion
* $39.99 for Classic WoW and Burning Crusade expansion packaged as WoW Battle Chest
John is correct.
Also, you should play on Gnomeregan.
