Can you download new world of warcraft patches without using the world of warcraft launcher?

The launcher like the screen that says play in the bottom right corner. When i open the launcher it says theres an error but i can open world of warcraft the application. so would i still be able to play by downloading patches somewhere else? Or will it automatically start installing or what?
