Zune 30gb fix/solution if it won’t start/boot up (not frozen)
This is how I fixed my 30gb Zune (1st generation). It’s not a frozen Zune like other people have experienced. It’ll just restart over and over and it won’t boot up. So replace the battery. I bought a replacement battery on ebay for $8. Hope this helps someone. Edit: Before buying the new battery, I first tried unplugging the original battery for 1 minute and then plugging it back in, in the hope that it would reset the zune, but that didn’t work for me. These 1st generation zunes are so old that they need new batteries after many years of recharging and discharging after regular daily use. It seems that if the battery goes bad, then it won’t allow the zune to boot up.

@screamOunder I’m happy to know that I helped you! It makes me smile knowing that I helped you fix it yourself and save you a bit of money. Thanks for watching and for letting me know of your success.
@moiosnob Thanks for watching!
w00ttss o so much thank you!! Bought the battterie on ebay and did everything! Now works perfectly!THANK YOU!!!You saved me money and not buying a new mp3… It has to work 10 more years xD
Thank You. Nice!
@sradie I’m very happy that this worked for you and that you were able to save some money. It’s always more satisfying when you fix it with your own hands. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, the fix worked perfectly. I got a battery from ebay that came with the two tools needed to change it. It cost $7.77. My Zune is working perfectly now. Thanks for a well done presentation.
Your fix worked perfectly. Thanks so much. I was able to get a longer lasting rechargeable battery on ebay for $7.77 which included shipping and a screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws plus another screwdriver suitable for poping the case open. Grateful for the help, I am retired on a fixed income and buying a new Zune just isn’t possible. I like my Zune and you saved it for me.
@PNKEEE07 You’re welcome! Very happy to help.
thank you SSOOO much for uploading this. I was scouring the internet trying to figure out what was going on with mine thinking i was the only one with this problem!
@ItzXdAxAzNbOi I hadn’t considered a static buildup. But I’m sure that was not my problem. It was my battery not holding a charge anymore. As for stopping the device from your computer, I’m assuming you mean ejecting or disconnecting it safely with the little icon on the taskbar? That doesn’t cut the power to that particular USB port. You can ‘eject’ a device but it will still draw power until you unplug it. At least that is how it works on both my PC and laptop. Thanks for the comment.
@ItzXdAxAzNbOi also, when i was waiting for my replacement battery was coming in, i never touched my zune. i just left it off. then when my battery finally arrived, i turned it back on and it works. if you dont want to buy a replacement battery, wait a couple of days or a week and it might work. and if it does work, when you charge it on a computer, then MAKE SURE you STOP the device BEFORE you remove to prevent the static discharging. im keeping my old battery in case the new one discharges.
this fixed my zune but i think the cause of this is because of static discharging. ive had my zune 30gb since the release and its been working perfectly fine up until last week or so. it was because i was charging my zune on a dock and then i usually just pull it off after its done charging. this created a little discharged and kind of fried the battery. so to prevent this, just go to your computer and click stop so the flow of electricity stops so it wont static discharge.
@sradie By this time, all the batteries of these old zunes will start failing especially after repeated daily use when you recharge them every day. Eventually they lose their ability to hold a charge. Microsoft will never tell you this is the problem. They would rather you send it to them and charge you who knows how much to fix it. Instead that encourages you to buy a newer one. I hope you are able to fix it, let us know. Thanks for watching and Good Luck!
I think you just solved my problem. I am going to get a battery and try it. If it works, or not, I will come back and let you know. My 30GB is about six years old so the battery will probably fix it. It is doing exactly what you show. Thanks for a great job on your video. Microsoft does not provide this information, I guess they want people to buy the newer models.
@chidum I’m sorry. I don’t think I can help you with an audio jack problem. Maybe try to make sure it’s clean first. If the port is loose, maybe something has broken? maybe it needs to be resoldered? Sorry I can’t be more help.
do you know where the audio part is? my audio jack port is messed up
@christian1terminate Thanks for the comment. I’m glad it helped you out. I always try to be clear and detailed. But, I always feel that I go on and on when I explain things so I tried to go quickly in this video. Happy that you found it short!
I just needed to learn how to open up my Zune.Great video by the way very clear and detail. Short too
@ThisExile I hope this works for you too! It has worked for others. Thanks for the comment. Let us know when it’s up and running again. Good luck.

@Azoyani I’m glad to save you some money in helping you fix it yourself. Other people have said that it worked for them. Hopefully it does for you too. Let us know when it’s up and running again. Thanks for the comment and for watching! Good luck!
Thank you so much for this information!!! the best I’ve seen yet. I’m having the same exact problem with mine. so I’m going to give this a try!
@TheReecelyne Happy to help. I hope you fix it. Let us know when it’s up and running again.
@deadgodanubis Thank you sir :D
@TheReecelyne I could do a video of that, but there are already other videos of the same thing. I suggest you watch “Zune LCD Screen Replacement – Take Apart & Repair Guide” by REPAIRSUNIVERSE. That one shows you how to take it all apart until you take the screen off. To remove the motherboard from the case, you remove 6 small screws and 4 white clips. Then 4 other clips for the screen and 1 ribbon cable and the screen is out. Check that one out
