Your Questions About Bluetooth Technology In Cars

Michael asks…
What purposes does blue tooth serve?
I know what the purpose of bluetooth is on cell phones but I have recently heard about it being in cars too. So my question is what is bluetooth mainly supposed to do and what are it’s possibilities? And what about blu ray discs and things like that, are they connected with this technology?
dknol answers:
Having bluetooth in your car essentially acts a speakerphone so you can drive with both hands and focus on the road while talking on the phone. Many cars have a voice activated phone book so you simply push a button and say “Call ____” and it will dial. This will help when using cell phones while driving becomes illegal. I have bluetooth in my car, and it’s great!!! It is very simple to use and very convient.
An ear peice bluetooth is capable of sending and recieving all kinds of media for your phone. Many people send and recieve songs to avoid paying for them as ringtones.
As for the blu disks and such, I do not know anything about them. =]

John asks…
How do I use Bluetooth to sync my iPhone to my car radio?
I am in the process of getting an iPhone, but I also want to buy a new radio for my car. I know that there is a way for me to use Bluetooth to sync my iPhone to my radio. However, I know absolutely nothing about this technology. I think this will allow me to play music from my iPhone on my radio, but I’m not sure, I’m also not sure if I will have to purchase any kind of plan to make my phone Bluetooth capable. If somebody could help me understand the basic requirements, and maybe how it works, I would really appriciate it.

Linda asks…
Is there ONE device that is an Int’l Cell Phone, GPS, MP3, Bluetooth, Digi Cam, and More?
My friend is moving to Venezuela from Seattle next month for a one year teaching job and asked me to do some research. She wants ONE device (if one exists) that is an affordable international cell phone, GPS, MP3 player, bluetooth, digital camera, video recorder, calendar, and _______ (fill in the blank). Ideally this device would also be a microwave oven, clean house, do laundry, cook gourmet meals, wash the car, pay bills, water the plants, etc. ;-)
Technology changes so quickly that even though I think this is a lot to expect from one device, it wouldn’t surprise me if there is such a device. Nothing surprises me anymore!
What would you recommend, and why?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer this question :-)

The Google Nexus One. Based on Android, it’s superior to any other device, including the iPhone and anything Blackberry can offer. The device does all those things you mentioned. It’s a GSM phone, so it will work on 99% of the planet.
The Nexus One’s T-Mobile version has the frequencies to work with Digitel’s cell service in Venezuela, including their 3G data.
The phone comes SIM unlocked from the manufacturer, so all she needs to do it slip in the SIM card and she’s ready to go.
Since she’ll be working in a foreign country, she shouldn’t get service in the US then use roaming in South America. This will cost thousands of dollars each month. She needs to use a GSM phone, and get service down there. Far cheaper.
The nice thing is that the phone has integrated Google apps, so it stays in sync with her Gmail, contacts and calendar. No special software needed.
The Nexus isn’t cheap, but it is a terrific phone. She can use it with T-Mobile’s service when she returns. In fact, if the buys the phone outright, she can get a no-contract plan from T-Mo, which are very reasonable.

I’ve had mine since March. Simply terrific, best phone I’ve ever owned.

Steven asks…
Used mustang or new compact SUV?
My parents don’t think a 16 year old should have a new sports car, so it’s either a used mustang (probably 07-09) or a new SUV (either an escape or equinox)
I’ve been watching videos of the escape and equinox. They have ALOT of neat technology features. Like USB port ipod, back up camera, starting car from the key remote, Bluetooth on the car, etc.
If I got a mustang, I wouldn’t have any of that.
The only cars I’ve driven are my mom’s Cobalt (05) and her friend’s land rover.. The land rover was just wayy too big. But I didn’t get the chance to get used to it, only drove it for a day.
I would be driving with my friends alot, so cramming them in the backseat of a mustang… I almost feel bad for them lol.
But I love driving. It’s not that I need a car to go places I NEED to go. I need a ride to school and I just like driving. So that’s where the mustang would just really be nice..
So I’m split between actual performance, vs. inside quality…
Any tips when buying used mustangs or other sports cars?
Thanks!

dknol answers:
$3000 is a little on the low side…
I’d say somewhere between $5000-$7500 for the state-of-the-art hardware alone (assuming you don’t want a gigantic monitor) and add in $1500+ for a professional audio/video editing suite…and 3d design software starts about $50 for the basic house one…and rises up to maybe thousands of dollars for the crazy professional ones.
Don’t forget $150 for windows xp pro and maybe $300 for microsoft office pro
these figures above are pretty rough estimates (also assuming that you’re only after consumer level hardware)…if you’re serious about building such a monster…e-mail me.
